GP Net Earnings

Statement of GP Earnings

From April 2016 it is a requirement for practices to publish the mean net NHS earnings of the Partners, Salaried GPs, and any locum who has worked in the practice for over 6 months.  The calculated value is before income tax, NI, and employee pension contributions and is for 4 partners, 2 salaried doctors, and 2 locums.  The resulting figure for 2017/2018 is £85656.

It should be noted that the prescribed method for calculating earnings is potentially misleading because it takes no account of how much time a doctor spends working in practice.  For example, a doctor working 1/2 day per week counts the same for a full time doctor in the calculation.  Therefore, practices that have many part time doctors or that use a high number of locums will typically calculate a lower figure than a practice with mostly full time doctors.  This information, therefore, should not be used to form a judgement about actual GP earnings or to make any comparison with other practices
